COLUMBUS, Ohio — Dan Mullen approached Urban Meyer after the Florida Gators had just won the 2008 SEC championship game.

Mullen had received a phone call from Mississippi State after the game to ask if he’d be interested in interviewing for the Bulldogs’ vacant head coaching job. Mullen was interested; it was an opportunity to land his first head coaching gig in his then-15 year career.

First, Mullen wanted to run it by Meyer, his boss.

“Dan, you’re from New Hampshire,” Meyer said.

It wasn’t a last-ditch effort to keep Mullen, who helped Meyer guide the Gators to a national championship two years earlier.

He just wanted to make sure his friend was making the right decision.

Meyer knows the game. To become a successful head coach in any sport, you need to surround yourself with good assistants. If you’re doing your job right, those assistants eventually move on.

That’s what makes working under Meyer such an attractive premise. He’s had plenty of assistants move on and find success as head coaches.

Current Ohio State assistant coaches like Tom Herman, Chris Ash and Ed Warinner are hoping to be the next in line.

“I want a chance to be a head coach,”
